Rest In Peace Stevie

Stevie warming up to me after bringing her home

Yesterday, the mother of the first two Muse Pointers litters passed away unexpectedly.  We are not sure at this point what happened to Stevie, but she is no longer with us.

Stevie was added to the clan in 2011.  There was ad for her on Southern Airboat.  I called the owner and he said they had tried to make a hog dog out of her, but she wouldn't hunt.  He ended up giving Stevie to me.  Stevie's real name was Ann Marie Von Heidbrink and her original trainer nicknamed her "PV" (said peevee) because he said she was full of piss and vinegar.  The original owner didn't like this nickname and began calling here Stevie.  Stevie had an original owner who was an older gentleman that passed away when Stevie was just a pup.  She was bounced around from home to home until the gentleman that I got her from ended up with her.  He had a small yard, much too small for Stevie to stretch her legs in, and when she wouldn't hunt, he wanted to get her to a good home.

Getting some rope training, learning how to come when called.

So Stevie came home with me, but you could instantly tell she was traumatized by some of the earlier events in her life.  She was super-shy, and didn't want to come at first.  She quickly became adjusted to life with the other bird dogs, but she was always a bit "odd" compared to the other bird dogs.  I got Stevie for one reason and one reason only, to use her for breeding purposes.  The owner had said she was gun shy and wouldn't hunt, but that the old man loved her and kept her around.  He had told me that the old man would take her for rides in his golf cart and that she absoluetly loved it and was very close with the old man.  I would take her out so often and load her up in my Polaris Ranger and take her for rides.  She would snuggle right up next to you and put her paw on your leg.  You could tell she had done it before.

Stevie became a mother at the age of three.  I didn't know how she would react with her past as far as being a mother.  Her background including some quality dogs, as her parents were both grand champions in the German Short-haired Pointer (GSP) class.  She was outstanding in her role as a mother.  She gave birth to two litters that we kept a puppy from each, Maggie from the first and Ruger from the second.  Stevie was very good with her pups, but was also good with us handling them.  She understood her place in the food chain all too well.

In recent years Stevie had sort of been "put to pasture" as I felt she had reached an age too old to breed, but she had earned her retirement, despite her inability to hunt.  She was a bit stubborn at times and did not always care for her daughter Maggie.  She would be overly aggressive with Maggie at times, but I simply think it was a domination thing, and she was letting Maggie know who was boss.

Anyhow, yesterday I came upon her in her pen, dead.  I'm not sure if it was a heart attack or stroke or what, but she had been perfectly fine the day before when I fed them.  My wife and I were completely taken by surprise.  I buried her on my hunting lease yesterday afternoon.  I've done this with most of my dogs, as I feel it's where they need to be laid.  She didn't hunt, but we did take her out there and let her run and she loved it.  The ol' girl I affectionately nicknamed "Mama San" is gone.  Stevie, you will be missed.  R.I.P. Stevie.

Set up Your Pick Up Time For This Saturday!!!!

All owners of Muse Pointers second litter should call me and set up a time to pick up your puppies this Saturday.  Appointments begin at 1 P.M. Saturday afternoon and will last for one week.  After a week if you have not picked up your puppy, they will go to the next person in line that wants them.  Please contact me and let me know when you can pick the puppy up.  All puppies will have their shots and will have their AKC paperwork ready to be filled out.

Here are some pictures of the pups pointing a quail wing yesterday.  I know most of them won't be hunters, but there's no reason to bridle their inner bird dog right?!

Here are some other pictures of the puppies just playing. They are fun, but they are a lot of work, and though we will be glad to see them go to their new homes, there is always a part of you that misses them.

We have sure enjoyed them, as will you!  Again, get in touch with us, as Saturday is the pick-up date, and if you can't make it Saturday, we can make other arrangements for  you to pick up your puppy.  Look forward to seeing everyone again, and seeing our second litter head off to their new homes!  I'm sure their mother Stevie will be sad to see them go, but with all the hard work, I'm sure she won't mind, she's been tuckered out trying to keep up with seven puppies!!!

Meal Time!!!!

The pups got their first meal on their own today.  We mixed up some cornflakes and warm milk in a glass pan, and man did they go to town on that stuff!  You can see from the pictures that there almost wasn't enough room for all of them at the pan (we had to help a few of the shy ones).

The pups are also getting bold as some are escaping from the whelping box now.  Looks like it's time to move them outside onto the carport in their new pen!  That should happen this weekend, will show pictures of the move once it's complete.  Stay tuned for more posts!

Maggie-From Rope Training to Pointing and Honoring

Well, after the loss of the final of the Fab Five, we've been reduced to basically two rookies.  Maggie and her father Smokie are all that are left and have been in need of some serious training.  This is their third outing of the season (soooo not enough), but they did fairly well and are progressing along very nicely.

Maggie starting off on the rope
We bought 12 birds and went to our lease to do the training.  Smokie got zero rope time and did very well, once he was by himself.  He did struggle a bit once Maggie was with him as they wanted to compete, but that will come with more training.

Smokie and Maggie Hunting

Maggie honoring Smokie, her first time ever!
As you can tell, not really "quail woods" we were training them in, but we did have a few singles make it into the rough areas for some good training.  Anyhow, Maggie is the first and only Muse Pointer to be labeled as truly a bird dog (all the others have gone as pets, you can check them out here).

Maggie locked up
Anyhow, that's an update on our Muse Pointer that we kept.  We are steadily dwindling down in numbers as it looks like after tomorrow there will be only one puppy left.  Keep checking the blog for more updates on the pups and the litters!

Only 3 More Left!!!!

We've got 2 females and one male left out of the latest litter.  Here are some pictures of three available.

This is one of the females.  We call her "Spot" because of the single spot she has in the middle of her back.

This is the other female, we call her Tiny.  She's the smallest of the litter, but has plenty of spunk, and to me has the cutest face of the bunch.

This is the only male left.  We don't have a nickname for him yet, but he is very feisty and has a great personality.  He's always in the mix when the puppies are tussling.

I have had a lot of phone calls and emails, so please make your appointment soon.  Deposits to hold dogs are $100.  You can reach me via email at musepointers@yahoo.com or (863)673-1688.  Please no texts, as it appears that's the way the scammers are trying to get at me these days.  Look forward to talking/seeing you soon.
